Mika Nakashima

Mika Nakashima, born on February 19th, 1983, in Hioki (Kagoshima Prefecture), is one of the most popular female singers in Japan. At the age of 17, after being selected to play the part of the main character in Kizudarake no Love Song (“Tainted Love Song”), she released her debut single, STARS. Her second single, CRESCENT MOON, was limited to 100 000 copies and sold out on its first day. She released a few top 10 hits before releasing her debut album, TRUE, which hit #1 on Oricon. She released by far her most popular song, Yuki no Hana (“snow flower”), on October 1st, 2003, which, while reaching only #3, remains one of the most popular karaoke songs in Japan. It also helped the sales of her second album, LOVE, which is her so far best-selling album, at 1.5 million copies sold. Since then, she has released another three original albums and is preparing to release her second compilation album, which will come out on the fourth of March. She starred in the movie NANA as the leading role, and released two singles under the name “NANA feat. Mika Nakashima”, finally releasing an album. The two songs were written by Hyde (“Glamorous Sky”) from L’Arc-en-Ciel, and Takuro (“Hitoiro”) from GLAY. The first single boosted her popularity after a sudden decline during the MUSIC era.

I’m quite sure that it will take a while to get used to Mika Nakashima. Her voice is rather bizarre, and takes some getting used to, but once you’ve found a few songs of hers that you really like, it won’t take too long to enjoy the rest of her material. She does primarily jazz-influenced pop songs, although there are always songs that are more pop-oriented. Mika is definitely an interesting artist that you’ll want to check out.

She’s good. I don’t love her, but she’s got style & she’s very different from the typical female artists that are all cutesy-kawaii (or trying to be).
