Utada Hikaru: Be My Last

1. Be My Last

Be My Last is Utada Hikaru’s fourteenth single, released on September 28th, 2005. It reached #1 on Oricon and has sold 150 928 copies.

Be My Last is a slow ballad with pretty much nothing but an acoustic guitar and eventual drums for the chorus. A lot of people have criticized this song for being repetitive, lacking something, etcetera, but I find this ballad to be even more moving and powerful than the previous one. The long “aaaah”s (don’t ask me how she holds her breath that long), although of no particular use, are actually pretty awesome, and play a powerful part in the song. Her vocals here again are shaky in order to portray the sadness, here caused by the destruction of things we made ourselves.
